In a small prefecture in the north of Tokyo, there’s an island known to Japanese people as the “island of exile”. It’s name is Sadogashima. Since medieval times, political opponents, artists, homeless and criminals were deported here and often put to forced labor in the island’s gold mine. During its peak production period, from around 1615 to 1645, the mines on Sado produced an estimated 400 kilograms of gold per year, resulting in one of the largest producers of gold in the world
In the heart of this mine, dug into the belly of Mount Doyu no-wareto, the ghosts of those who were once confined there are condemned to work its gold-veined cavities in eternity, overwhelmed by the endless depths of the ground. But to what heights can the spirit rise? Like water, the miner’s bitter enemy, the ancient spirits will try to dig a path through the rock, and perhaps they will be able to see the sky again.
